New Pavilion Building

Ascension Catholic needed a facade design that would assimilate the new recreational facility into a historic campus.

I recently finished working on the Facade design of the new Pavilion Building for the Ascension Catholic campus. For this project I produced several perspectives for the proposed design phases. The new building will serve as a landmark for the campus. The Pavilion will be be much larger than any of the existing buildings on the campus. Our goal was to create a modern structure that would be cohesive with a historic campus. Elements from the Old Convent building are integrated into the design.

Facade Design
Some of the issues we dealt with included: Budgeting constraints, Historic preservation constraints, metal frame without a facade, needs to keep with the identity of the school, large building could dwarf other campus buildings.
History
The Old Convent building was established in 1850. It was used as a hospital during the civil war and later became one of the first interracial schools for the area.

For this project I worked with a team of architects to design and draft the new building for Clegg’s Nursery.
We collaborated on construction documents and design ideas. I aided in fire code research for the building and document notations. In addition to the construction documents I collaborated on, I personally designed the bathrooms to ADA specification, and designed all the custom cabinetry for the building.
A few of my contributions are shown below including elevation and detail drawings. The detail drawings of built-ins that I provided were Of the office, bathroom and break room areas and the new registers.
Designing in Phases
Being that this is a 360,000 dollar project, the school would need to break the construction down into phases. Before starting the project, they raised half of their funds through community donations. The first stage would be the metal framing by itself. We call this The Pavilion and it is how the building got its name. In phase 2 we enclose the structure. For the third and final stage of design, offices are added onto the front and locker rooms to the back.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS
Commercial buildings must abide by building codes and regulations. ADA Regulation and building code research is important in the construction of a new building.
All cabinetry is custom designed for the building, therefore I provided detail drawings and coordinated with the Millworker to ensure quality. In conclusion of the project, I submitted our plans to the Fire Marshall to be approved before bringing the construction document set to a printing service.
