Identifying and addressing issues:

Architectural Drafting and Space Planning
with Architect, Jairo Leon

For this project I worked with a team of architects to design and draft the new building for Clegg’s Nursery.
We collaborated on construction documents and design ideas. I aided in fire code research for the building and document notations. In addition to the construction documents I collaborated on, I personally designed the bathrooms to ADA specification, and designed all the custom cabinetry for the building.
A few of my contributions are shown below including elevation and detail drawings. The detail drawings of built-ins that I provided were Of the office, bathroom and break room areas and the new registers.
Commercial buildings must abide by building codes and regulations. ADA Regulation and building code research is important in the construction of a new building.
All cabinetry is custom designed for the building, therefore I provided detail drawings and coordinated with the Millworker to ensure quality. In conclusion of the project, I submitted our plans to the Fire Marshall to be approved before bringing the construction document set to a printing service.

BRANDING AND MARKETING

The branding that I provided Gelato's was inspired by the gelato itself. The bright colors are carried throughout the design.
Gelato Pazzo Caffe wanted their younger market to view the restaurant as a place to hang out and do homework or study. In order to do that, I provided the restaurant with a more spirited image and an upbeat atmosphere.
SPACE PLANNING

Gelato's was previously located on the riverwalk. The restaurant had to be relocated after hurricane Katrina. The new space occupies a historic building on Oak Street Main Street.

The space is a great location, but the custom fixtures from the original location did not work well with the new building. The deli cooler, for instance, is located at the back of the restaurant. Most customers are unaware that there are lunch menus available along with the hand made, traditional italian gelato.
FACADE DESIGN
HISTORIC PRESERVATION

FACADE DESIGN - HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Historic Preservation research was completed in order to provide a solution that gave Gelato's its own identity without losing the historic quality of the building. Gelato's is located on Oak Street Mainstreet.
Through color and texture I have given Gelato its own identity that is separate from the adjacent buildings. The color helps to attract the attention of commuters and is inspired by the homemade gelato being served inside.
We took down the Iron bars on the door to give the entrance a more inviting presentation, and the signage now has a presence. Before the sign was small, hard to see, and lacked color. Now it is large, bright and it presents Gelato's as a modern and enjoyable place to spend your afternoon.

FLOOR PLAN DESIGN

The custom display cases are now being utilized in a visible way that addresses the street. Bar seating at the windows sends a welcoming invitation to passers by.
Gelato’s target market is ages 5-25. The new brand and design is inspired by the gelato itself giving the restaurant a fun, youthful look. A display area is provided behind the counter for merchandising and a menu board.
Through space planning, the fabric canopy area is now a focal point that draws customers to the rear of the restaurant. The ceiling cloud gives the counter space authority over the dining area and serves to make the booth seating behind the partitioning wall a more intimate area.
Segmented seating areas better utilize the size of the space, creating different levels of intimacy in dining areas.
Enclosing the counter eliminated the open cabinets previously visible to the customers.
